We have decided

after much deliberation and discussion

that you don’t deserve

to die with dignity

but in the wonderment of what

could’ve been

if you belonged elsewhere

if you were content

if your career fit

if you were worth it

if you weren’t

if you woke up at five am every night

because of something other than work

if that cat really cared

if school really helped

if you managed to find love

or if it found you like that cat

or like school which led back home

and to you there wondering what’s next,

which was us

and this decision

to leave you wondering more:

whether you were

happy or sad

funny or stern

justified or spiteful

and who were we

after it all

to decide these things

for you

if we don’t know

the answers ourselves

for you don’t

and we are you

when you weren’t you now

when you were happy and sad

funny and stern

justified and spiteful

and when you did not know

the decision was up to you

to die with anything besides
